Polish Researchers Secure EU Grant for Climate Modeling

Nils Frank · 2 September 2026

A consortium of Polish universities has been awarded a substantial grant from the European Union to advance climate modeling techniques. The funding, totaling 4.8 million euros over four years, supports the development of high-resolution models that integrate regional data from Central Europe with global climate projections.

The project, led by researchers at the University of Warsaw and the Polish Academy of Sciences, aims to improve predictions of extreme weather events such as floods and heatwaves. Partners from Germany and Sweden will contribute expertise in atmospheric physics and data assimilation.

Technical Innovations in Modeling

Central to the initiative is the creation of a new framework that combines machine learning with traditional numerical simulations. This hybrid approach seeks to reduce computational costs while increasing accuracy for localized forecasts. Initial tests will focus on the Baltic Sea basin, where rising sea levels pose risks to coastal infrastructure.

Team members emphasize the importance of open-source tools, planning to release datasets and code through public repositories. Training programs for early-career scientists are also included to build capacity across the region.

Broader Impacts on Policy and Research

Findings are expected to inform national adaptation strategies and contribute to the European Green Deal objectives. By refining models for variable terrain and seasonal patterns, the work could enhance early-warning systems used by meteorological agencies.

Project coordinators note that collaboration with policymakers will ensure practical application of results. Regular workshops will facilitate knowledge exchange among participating institutions and stakeholders from agriculture and energy sectors.
